Year 9 Visual Art Students Visit the National Gallery of Victoria

This term our year 9 Visual Art class spent a day at The National Gallery of Victoria to enhance their learning and provide real life experience with the artworks they have studied. The students heard a talk about the Escher x Nendo exhibition and then had the opportunity to walk through as a class. M.C Escher is best known for his optical illusions and his tessellation prints. The students were immersed in spaces designed by studio Nendo, which contained not only M.C Escher’s most captivating pieces, but the music that he himself was inspired by.

Another highlight of the trip to NGV was the opportunity to be face to face with the Pablo Picasso artwork named ‘The Weeping Woman’. As a part of their studies, the year 9 students have been focussing on the Cubist art movement and were very familiar with the work of Picasso. Seeing this painting in person proved to be a rewarding experience and the students gasped and pointed when they saw it from across the gallery. The excursion deeply enriched their appreciation for artistic practice and Cubism as a whole.
